Basics on the topic Animals and Plants at the Pond

Join Newton and find out about animals and plants that live in and around ponds.

Transcript Animals and Plants at the Pond

Newton is going on a very special discovery tour today. Ze has read about a coontail and wants to find out what that is. In zir research, Newton searches the zones of the pond and discovers the... "Animals and Plants at the Pond". Let's discover the zones at the pond together with Newton. The zones of the pond show us where different animals and plants live. There are a total of three zones. The first zone, the littoral zone, is where the water meets the land. This is located closest to the shore where aquatic, or water plants grow. Reeds are an aquatic grass that grow in this zone... along with other plants, such as the bulrush. Oh, what's this? A mallard in its nest! Newton shouldn't fly too close. The pond is now getting deeper and Newton has to think about how ze can breathe under water for the next zone. Oh, what do we have here? A water spider. This spider knows a trick for diving. It takes an air bubble under water! Newton tries it... And sets out on the way to the limnetic zone. This is a well-lit, open surface area of the pond where living things reside and vegetation can grow. For example the beautiful water lily ... ... and there are all kinds of small fish that hide underneath them... ...such as minnows. In the profundal zone, the water is deep enough for large fish and plants to grow completely under water. This is where carp lives, so they can look for food on the ground... and pike, who is hunting for smaller fish. Will Newton finally find the coontail on the bottom of the pond? Look there, the coontail is a plant! Hurry back to the surface, Newton! Before you run out of air! Newton feels much more comfortable up here! While ze takes a little break, we can summarize what you learned today. There are three zones at the pond: The first zone is the Littoral Zone with the reed,... bulrush ... and the mallard. The second zone is the Limnetic Zone with the water lily ... and the minnow. And the third and last zone is the Profundal Zone with large fish such as carp, ... pike, ... and plants like the coontail. That was a great discovery tour! We learned a lot today. What will Newton do now? Ze is already looking for the next adventure.

Animals and Plants at the Pond exercise

Would you like to apply the knowledge you’ve learned? You can review and practice it with the tasks for the video Animals and Plants at the Pond.
  • What do the zones of the ponds do?

    Hints

Remember where Newton is during the video! It is a small body of water!

Here is an image of the zones of the pond!

    Solution

If you said the following sentence, you're correct!

The three zones of the pond show us where different plants and animals live.

Let's explore the different zones in more detail!

  • What is each zone of the pond called?

    Hints

You may find plants like this in the Littoral Zone of a pond.

The Profundal Zone of a pond is home to larger fish like this that need lots of room to swim!

    Solution

The three zones for the pond are:

The Littoral Zone is where the water meets the land

The Limnetic Zone is a well-lit zone of the pond where living things and plants can grow.

The Profundal Zone is where the water is deep enough for large fish and plants to grow.

  • Where in the pond can you find the plants and animals?

    Hints

The three zones for the pond are:

The Littoral Zone is where the water meets the land.

The Limnetic Zone is a well-lit zone of the pond where living things and plants can grow.

The Profundal Zone is where the water is deep enough for large fish and plants to grow.

The carp and the pike are large fish so they would need a lot of space to swim around.

The Limnetic Zone will only have two possible answers here in this question.

    Solution

You can see all of the correct answers in the picture here!

Reeds, bulrush, and mallard ducks are some of the living things we would find in the Littoral Zone.

Water lilies and small fish like minnows can be found in the Limnetic Zone.

Large fish like carp and pike and plants like coontail can be found in the Profundal Zone.

  • What can you tell about the different zones?

    Hints

A mallard duck can swim in the pond and walk on land.

The minnow is a small fish that does not need to swim in deep water!

The pike needs to swim around in deep water.

    Solution

The Littoral Zone is where the water meets the land. Animals that can live on the land and water live here like the mallard duck. Aquatic plants like reed and bulrush are found here too!

The Limnetic Zone is a well-lit open area of the pond. Small fish like the minnow live here as well as water spiders.

The Profundal Zone has the deepest water where large plants and fish can grow. Large fish like the carp and pike live here.

  • Which pond zone is it?

    Hints

Pike is a type of large fish. You'd find it in the Profundal Zone.

Mallard ducks can build their nest on land in the Littoral Zone.

A minnow is a type of small fish that lives in the Limnetic zone.

    Solution

The Littoral Zone is where the water meets the land and is located closest to the shore. Aquatic plants like reeds and bulrush grow here.

The Limnetic Zone is a well-lit, open surface area where things like small fish live and water lilies grow.

The Profundal Zone is the deepest part of the water. Large fish and plants grow here.

  • Where could you find this animal in the pond?

    Hints

If the animal is a type of fish, it can't go on land.

Think about where in the pond you would find the plant coontail.

A large fish would need a lot of space to swim so it likely won't be found near the shore!

    Solution

The animal is likely to be found in the Profundal Zone. Let's explore how we know this:

-We know the animal is a fish. A fish cannot reside in the Littoral Zone, because it cannot live on land.

-A larger fish needs room to swim, which is found in the Profundal Zone.

-The large aquatic plant Coontail is found in the Profundal Zone as well. It can grow large here!
