Transcript Fire Safety Measures

What is Uma reading today? Oh! Is there a fire in the apartment? Calm down a bit, Uma! In order for us to know what to do when there is a fire, let's learn about fire safety measures! If you hear a fire alarm, it is important to stay calm. This is very important, because if you're calm you can take action and remember to first, close the window, so that the fire cannot spread any further. Then, get to safety! If there is a fire or smoke, do not hide in the room, leave the room as soon as possible. Close the door behind you to trap the smoke in the room as well. Do not go back! Not even if you have forgotten something important. Even if no flame is visible yet, smoke can be dangerous. Breathing becomes more difficult. In the worst case scenario, there is even a risk of suffocation! If the room is on fire, it is best to crawl out of the room. Then you can avoid the heat and smoke, because both rise to the top. If you or your clothes catch on fire: Stop, drop, and roll on the floor. This is good to know for when there is a fire. Uma is already on her way out. In tall buildings or public buildings, like your school, you'll find these green signs with white arrows. Pay attention to them! These are signs for escape routes. Follow them and you'll find the fastest way out! Never use an elevator in case of fire! Once you're safe, get help from an adult! And dial the emergency number 911 as soon as possible. At your school, be extra careful of each other when you leave the classroom! Follow your schools fire procedure at all times! Listen to all directions from adults who are helping you! And go together to the assembly point, or meeting spot. You might see this sign, which tells you where the assembly point is located, but otherwise follow or listen to where adults tell you to go. Once there, wait together until the alarm is over! Did you know that in public buildings, like schools or hospitals, you can also alert the fire department with a fire alarm? If the building also has one of these fire alarms, you can follow the directions on the alarm. When you follow the directions, the alarm is then triggered and sent to the fire department. Wait, one more important thing: small fires can be extinguished with a fire extinguisher. A fire blanket can also be used to extinguish the fire. If you see one of these signs, you know that there is either a fire extinguisher or a fire blanket nearby. We learned a lot today with Uma. You now know the important signs and how to respond in case of a fire! Here you can see all the rules of conduct at a glance: First, stay calm, second, close the window, third, get to safety, fourth, get help, fifth, call 911! I wonder if everything is alright with Uma? Oh, Wilma, you're in the kitchen again! You were lucky! The only thing is, you can't eat the pizza now!
