Then, count how many tens and ones are left over. That's your answer! There is one ten and four ones, which means that twenty-six minus twelve equals fourteen. Let's see what else Mr. Squeaks ordered! If he ordered thirty-eight bolts, but only needs twenty-one, how many will be left over? How can we use place value to help solve this subtraction equation? Here are the steps:

1. Represent the larger number using place value blocks. In the equation 76-24, 76 is larger so we represent it in the chart by drawing 7 tens blocks and 6 ones cubes.
2. Next, we cross out the amount of the second number. The second number is 24. There are 2 tens so we cross out 2 tens blocks. There are 4 ones cubes so we cross out 4 ones cubes.
