Subtraction with Place Value

What is subtraction with place value blocks? You might already know about subtraction, where you take away one number from another. You might also know about place value, the value of a number depending on where it is. But, what does it mean to subtract using place value? Take a look at the subtraction with place value video below to learn more.

Solving Subtraction Using Place Value Strategy

How can you use subtraction with place value chart? There are many tools to solve subtraction equations, and one of them is using place value!

The definition for place value is:

Place value is when we represent each digit by its value based on where it is in a number.

You can do subtraction using tens and ones. When you do subtraction with place value blocks you represent the numbers using tens rods and blocks. Follow these steps to subtract numbers using place value blocks:

Step # What to do
1 Represent the larger number in the equation using place value blocks
2 Cross out the amount of the second number in the equation
3 Count how many tens and ones are left over, that is the answer!

2 Digit Subtraction with Place Value Blocks – Summary

When using subtraction with place value blocks no regrouping remember these steps:

  • Represent the larger number with place value blocks

  • Cross out the amount of the second number in the equation

  • Count how many tens and ones are left over to find the answer!

Transcript Using Place Value to Subtract Two Digit Numbers (No Regrouping)

: "Man oh man, this ice cream is GOOD!" : "But it's so tiring making it every time." : "If only there were some kind of machine... wait a second!" Mr. Squeaks and Imani are building an ice cream machine! But, Mr. Squeaks ordered too many parts! He needs to subtract from them to find out how many parts he will have left over. We can learn about "using place value to subtract (no regrouping)" to help! Just like there are many strategies and tools to add, there are also many for subtraction! In this video we will use place value to help solve subtraction equations. Place value is when we represent each digit by its value based on where it is in a number. For example, the number fifty-six is represented by five tens and six ones. Let's see what parts Mr. Squeaks orderd first! He ordered twenty-six screws but only needs twelve! We can use place value to help him find out how many will be left over. When using place value to subtract, always start by representing the larger number with base ten blocks. We can represent twenty-six with two tens and six ones. Next, cross out the amount of the second number in the equation. We need to cross out twelve, which is one ten and two ones. Then, count how many tens and ones are left over. That's your answer! There is one ten and four ones, which means that twenty-six minus twelve equals fourteen. Let's see what else Mr. Squeaks ordered! If he ordered thirty-eight bolts, but only needs twenty-one, how many will be left over? How can we use place value to help solve this subtraction equation? Start by representing the larger number with place value. Thirty-eight can be represented as three tens and eight ones. Next, cross out the amount of the second number. We need to cross out twenty-one, or two tens and one one. Finally, count how many tens and ones are left, and that's the answer! There is one ten and seven ones, so thirty-eight minus twenty-one equals seventeen! Mr. Squeaks ordered forty-seven mini-spoons when he meant to order thirty-two. How many will be left over? Remember to start by representing the largest number with place value. Forty-seven can be represented with four tens and seven ones. Next, cross out the amount of the second number. We need to cross out thirty-two, or three tens and two ones. Then, count how many tens and ones are left over. There is one ten and five ones left over, so, forty-seven minus thirty-two equals fifteen! Before we see if they got their machine working, let's review. Today we learned about using place value to subtract. When subtracting with place value remember... ALWAYS start by representing the larger number with place value. Next, cross out the amount of the second number. Then, count how many tens and ones are left over. The amount of tens and ones left over is the answer! Now, let's see about that ice cream! : "Who knew that with just a bit of hard work that I could have the most delicious ice cream without even making it!" : "This is the LIFE!" .

Using Place Value to Subtract Two Digit Numbers (No Regrouping) exercise

Would you like to apply the knowledge you’ve learned? You can review and practice it with the tasks for the video Using Place Value to Subtract Two Digit Numbers (No Regrouping).
  • Which place value chart is set up correctly?

    Hints

Remember when using place value to subtract, always represent the larger number with base ten blocks.

This is an example of a place value chart.

    Solution

The place place in the image above correctly shows how we would solve 38 - 22 = ?

    • This is because the larger number, 38 is correctly split into tens add ones.
    • Since there is a 3 in the tens place, there needs to be 3 blue base ten blocks.
    • Since there is an 8 in the ones place, there needs to be 8 green one blocks.
    • From here, we would cross off 2 blue tens and 2 green ones to get the solution.

  • What are the steps for solving a subtraction problem?

    Hints

A place value chart needs to be created before you can begin to subtract.

Represent the larger number in the chart.

After showing the larger number in the chart, cross off the smaller number.

    Solution

When you are subtracting, use the following steps:

    1. Represent the larger number using place value blocks. For this problem, the larger number is 48 so we put it in the chart.
    2. Next, cross out the number that is left. In this case, that is 37. So cross out 3 tens and 7 ones.
    3. Determine how many tens and ones are left.
    4. There is one ten and one one left which makes the answer 11.
  • Solve the equation.

    Hints

Remember, we represent the larger number with place value blocks like we see in the image here.

Think about place value-how many tens and ones do you need to take away?

    Solution

Mr. Squeaks and Imani will have 31 ice cream cones leftover.

As you can see in the image, we start by representing the number 45 on the place value chart. There are 4 tens and 5 ones. We then have to take away 14. So you cross out one ten and four ones. This leaves you with 31.

  • Find the correct subtraction problem.

    Hints

The larger number is represent by the place value blocks.

Cross out the amount of the second number.

Count how many place value blocks are left to get your answer.

    Solution

The image above is the first matching pair. We are going to use it as an example to go through the steps of using place value to solve subtraction problems.

    Here are the steps:

    1. Represent the larger number using place value blocks. In the equation 76-24, 76 is larger so we represent it in the chart by drawing 7 tens blocks and 6 ones cubes.
    2. Next, we cross out the amount of the second number. The second number is 24. There are 2 tens so we cross out 2 tens blocks. There are 4 ones cubes so we cross out 4 ones cubes.
    3. Count the blocks that are left. There are 5 tens and 2 ones left.
    4. Put what is left together to get the answer. The answer is 52.

  • Choose the correct place value chart.

    Hints

First, check to make sure the number represented in the chart matches how many ice cream cones they started with.

When we subtract, we are taking something away.

How many tens should you cross out? How many ones?

    Solution

Mr. Squeaks and Imani started with 68 ice cream cones so we would need to find the place value chart that accurately represents this number. That would be the chart that has 6 tens and 8 ones

To solve, you would cross out 3 tens and 6 ones. That leaves 3 tens and 2 ones which is the number 32.

  • What's missing from the place value charts?

    Hints

Check each part of the chart. Are the correct number of tens and ones shown?

Always represent the larger number with base ten blocks first.

    Solution

The images above show the last two problems as examples of how to solve. Here are the solutions:

    • For the equation, 58 - 35 =, there should be 5 tens on the place value chart.
    • For the equation 27 - 15 =, there are 4 ones cubes missing from the place value chart.
For the first two problems, you needed to find the number you were taking away or subtracting.
