Watch as Dee and Kala learn about the vowel Y at the end of one syllable words.

Transcript The Vowel Y (One Syllable Words)

Dee, Kala and their friend, Y, are at the fair being silly at the Hall of Mirrors. When Dee stands in front of his mirror, he looks like a long, bendy noodle. When Kala stands in front of her mirror, she looks really round and oh-so fluffy. But, when Y stands in front of its mirror, it looks like the letter I?! Wait a minute! How could this be? Let's introduce Dee and Kala to "The Vowel Y (One Syllable Words)". You may already know that the letter Y is a consonant and says /y/ as in yawn, yellow, or yo-yo! You may also remember that vowels are the letters A, E, I, O, and U. But, did you know that Y is a special letter that can be both a consonant and a vowel? Y acts as the vowel when there is no other vowel in the syllable by making a vowel sound. When Y comes at the end of a one syllable word, it says I like in the words cry, fly, and dry. Let’s say one together: Y, cry, /Ī/. Now that we know when Y can say I, let's try sorting some words into Y/y/ and Y/Ī/ groups! The first word is sky. What sound does Y make in sky? Y makes the long /Ī/ sound! It follows the consonant K at the end of a one syllable word! Let's try the word yak now. What sound does Y make in yak? Y makes the /y/ sound! It is a consonant in the beginning of the word, and the vowel A is there too! How about the word why? What sound does Y make here? Y makes the long I sound! It follows the consonant H at the end of a one syllable word! As Dee, Kala, and their friend Y start to leave the hall of mirrors, let's remember! Today, we learned that the letter Y can be a consonant AND a vowel. When the letter Y comes at the end of a one syllable word it no longer says /y/, instead it says/Ī/. Let's say it together one more time: Y, cry, /Ī/." These mirrors were so funny!" "I can't believe how we looked in them! "Wait, where's Y?” "Uh, Dee. Why is this happening again?"
