Transcript Advanced Vowel Pairs (Long Vowel Sounds)
Dee and Kala are attending the grand opening of the Long Vowel Boathouse. They recognize some familiar faces, but realize there are a lot of new pairs here they have not met before. Let's help them by meeting a few "Advanced Vowel Pairs, Long Vowel Sounds"! Remember syllables are words or word parts that have one vowel sound and take one puff of air to say. This type is called a vowel pair syllable. The long vowel sound comes from two vowels working together as a team! But, unlike other vowel pairs, some of these vowels don't let the first vowel speak. Sometimes the second vowel does the talking and other times the two vowels come together to make a totally different long vowel sound. First, Dee and Kala walk over to the A table where they see the pairs EA and EI. Every pair at this table makes the A sound. Sometimes in the vowel pair EA, the A speaks up instead of the E to make the long A sound. This happens in words like steak, great, or bear. EI can also make the long A sound! Together they say A in words like vein, veil, or reindeer! Next, Dee and Kala head to the E table where every pair makes the E sound. Here they are greeted by the pairs EI and IE . Kala looks confused, wasn't EI just at the A table? Yes, Kala, but EI can make both sounds! Sometimes the E comes first and does the talking like in the words ceiling or receipt! Other times, the E comes second but still does the talking when we write the vowel pair IE. Here IE says E as in field, yield, or piece. One way to remember the IE and EI vowel pairs is that I comes before E except after C! Finally, Dee and Kala make it to the last table. This is the long /oo/ table where every pair makes the /oo/ sound. There are three vowel pairs here: OO, UI and OU. Oftentimes, all three say /oo/ in the middle of words. We hear OO say /oo/ in words like moon and tooth! UI says /oo/ in suit, fruit, and juice! Finally, OU makes the /oo/ sound in soup or group, but OU can also show up at the ends of words like you! As Dee and Kala leave the grand opening and grab their swag bags, let's remember! Today we learned about advanced vowel pairs that make long vowel sounds. They have two vowels that come together to make one long vowel sound! But, unlike other vowel pairs, these vowels don't just let the first vowel speak. Sometimes the second vowel does the talking and other times the two vowels come together to make a totally different long vowel sound. "That was fun Dee!" "I can't wait to see what goodies are in here!"
