Transcript Adding Four Two Digit Numbers

Mr. Squeaks has been trying and trying to fly. He built a plane, but it didn't quite work. He's hoping that if he tries a kite, it might work! But, he needs to add all of the fabric pieces together and isn't sure how. We can help him by learning about 'Adding Four Two-Digit Numbers' You might know about math expressions that use two addends, such as twenty-two plus ten or adding three addends, such as twenty-two plus ten plus seven. So, what happens when there are four addends? Today we will learn about a strategy to add four addends. When adding four addends, start by writing all of the addends in a column vertically. Next, add all of the ones place numbers together, these are the numbers on the right. Then; add all of the tens place numbers together, these are the numbers on the left. Finally, the number under the line is the answer! We need to help our furry friend add four addends together. Mr. Squeaks is first adding four pieces of fabric with different measurements. He is adding twenty-one plus ten, plus twenty-one, plus twelve. Remember, we can start by writing all of the addends in a column vertically like this. Next, we can add all of the ones place numbers. One plus zero plus one plus two equals four! Then, we can add all of the tens place numbers. Two plus one plus two plus one equals six! Finally, the number under the line is the answer! That means that Mr. Squeaks' final measurement is sixty-four. That measurement was too small for our friend, so he needs to add again using new fabric. If he adds ten plus twenty-six, plus thirty-two, plus eleven, how much fabric will he have? Start by writing all of the addends in a column vertically, like this. Then, add all of the ones place numbers. What is zero plus six, plus two, plus one? Nine! Next, add all of the tens place numbers. What is one plus two, plus three, plus one? Seven! Finally, the number under the line is the answer! That means that Mr. Squeaks has seventy-nine pieces of fabric. This fabric was still too small for our furry friend, let's try one last time. This time we need to add twenty-two plus thirteen, plus forty, plus twenty-four. First, we can write all of the numbers vertically. Then, we need to add all of the ones numbers. After that, we need to add all of the tens numbers. Finally, the number under the line is the answer! How many pieces of fabric does Mr. Squeaks have? He has ninety-nine pieces of fabric! Before we see if Mr. Squeaks finally got to fly, let's remember. When adding four two-digit addends, start by writing all of the addends in a column vertically. Next, add all of the ones place numbers together. Then, add all of the tens place numbers together. Finally, the number under the line is the answer! Now, did Mr. Squeaks Finally fly? : "I'm flying! I'm flying! I'm falling!" : "That was close, thanks, Imani!

Adding Four Two Digit Numbers exercise

Would you like to apply the knowledge you’ve learned? You can review and practice it with the tasks for the video Adding Four Two Digit Numbers.
  • How much fabric does Mr Squeaks have?

    Hints

Start by adding the numbers in the ones column.

Once you have added the numbers in the ones column, add the numbers in the tens column.

    Solution

    13 + 23 + 31 + 30 = 97

    First add the ones:

    • 3 + 3 + 1 + 0 = 7
    Then add the tens:
    • 1 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 9
That gives us the answer 97.

  • How many pieces of wood does Mr Squeaks have?

    Hints

Find the numbers you are adding together and write out a column addition vertically to help you add.

Here we can see the numbers written vertically.

Add the ones and then add the tens.

    Solution

Mr Squeaks has 79 pieces of wood.

    First add the ones:

    • 4 + 1 + 0 + 4 = 9
    Then add the tens:
    • 1 + 2 + 1 + 3 = 7
This gives us the answer 79.

  • Can you solve the addition number sentences?

    Hints

Write out each addition problem in a column to help you.

You can use this image to help you solve the first problem.

Add the ones and then add the tens.

    Solution

    20 + 40 + 17 + 12 = 89

The image above shows us how we can solve this using column addition.

    First add the ones:

    • 0 + 0 + 7 + 2 = 9
    Then add the tens:
    • 2 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 8
That gives us the answer 89.

    _____________________________________________________

    • 10 + 11 + 26 + 31 = 78
    • 51 + 16 + 11 + 21 = 99
    • 33 + 22 + 14 + 10 = 79
  • How many tools does Mr Squeaks have?

    Hints

Find the four numbers you are adding together.

Write out a column addition to help you to solve.

Add the ones and then add the tens.

    Solution

To solve the problem, add 12 (hammers), 34 (screwdrivers), 41 (pliers) and 11 (saws).

    12 + 34 + 41 + 11 = 98

    First add the ones:

    • 2 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 8
    Then add the tens:
    • 1 + 3 + 4 + 1 = 9
That gives us the answer 98.

  • How many bolts does Mr Squeaks have?

    Hints

Start by adding the numbers in the ones column.

Once you have added the numbers in the ones column, add the numbers in the tens column.

    Solution

    25 + 20 + 11 + 32 = 88

    First add the ones:

    • 5 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 8
    Then add the tens:
    • 2 + 2 + 1 + 3 = 8
That gives us the answer 88.

  • Can you help Mr Squeaks?

    Hints

For the first two problems, create a column addition. Add the ones and then add the tens.

For the final problem, find out the total number of bananas and then add the four numbers together to find out how many pieces of fruit there are altogether.

    Solution

1.) Mr Squeaks is making snowballs. The first pile had 15 snowballs, the second had 13, the third had 40 and then the fourth had 20. Altogether, Mr Squeaks has made 88 snowballs.

    • 15 + 13 + 40 + 20 = 88
2.) Mr Squeaks is preparing breakfast. He has 10 croissants, 50 strawberries, 16 crumpets and 22 glasses of juice. Altogether, he has 98 items.

    • 10 + 50 + 16 + 22 = 98
3.) Mr Squeaks and Imani are making smoothies. They have 96 pieces of fruit altogether including 31 strawberries, two bunches of 5 bananas, 41 raspberries and 14 blueberries.

    • Find the total number of bananas: 2 x 5 = 10
    • Add 31 + 10 + 41 + 14 = 96
