To make inferences about a character's traits, you first need to analyze their thoughts, words, and actions.

    • I need to find the PERFECT outfit, Hewie thought. This shows Hewie is both careful and excited. He wants to make sure he looks his best for their special day.
    • "Nope, not gonna work!" This shows Hewie is unhappy with his decision and does not like the outfits he has tried on so far.
    • He tossed his clothes around the room. Hewie's actions of tossing his clothes suggest that he is annoyed and in a rush to find the right outfit.

Hewie thought he needed the perfect outfit. What does this observation tell the reader about the character?

Look for specific words and phrases in Hewie's thoughts, words, and actions that suggest his attitude and behavior towards the special day.

Pay attention to any actions Hewie takes to ensure that everything goes smoothly, and any expressions of excitement or anticipation.

    Solution

The question asks you to make an inference about Hewie based on his thoughts, words, and actions. To do this, you need to carefully identify evidence that supports one of the inferences listed in the answer choices.

The correct answer is Hewie is careful and excited about their special day.

Thoughts: "I need to find the PERFECT outfit." What does this observation tell the reader about the character? We can infer that Hewie is being careful about their special day.

Words: "Nope, not gonna work!" Hewie said to himself as he tossed his clothes around the room. We can infer that Hewie is being careful about their special day.

Actions: "He picked up one last outfit and smiled at himself in the mirror." We can infer that Hewie is excited about their special day.

  • Use your background knowledge to understand Hewie's thoughts, words, and actions.

    Hints

Look at the context of the sentence. What is happening in the sentence and what emotions might the character be feeling based on that context?

Pay attention to the tone of the sentence. Is the sentence written in a way that suggests a certain emotion?

Think about other words that might be associated with each of the character traits listed. For example, what other words might be used to describe someone who is joyful or confused? Would these words make sense in the blanks?

    Solution

1.) This sentence suggests that Hewie is feeling joyful. The word "beaming" is a clue, as it means to have a big smile on your face. Additionally, the fact that he has a beach bag with him could indicate that he is looking forward to going to the beach.

2.) This sentence suggests that Hewie is feeling embarrassed. The fact that his cheeks got hot is a clue, as this can happen when someone feels embarrassed or ashamed. Additionally, the presence of Ari and the crowd may have made him feel self-conscious.

3.) This sentence suggests that Hewie is feeling confused. The fact that he thought they were meeting at the beach, but ended up at a different location, indicates that he is uncertain or unsure about what is happening.

4.) This sentence suggests that Hewie is feeling apologetic, or sorry for something. The fact that he says "sorry" indicates that he feels bad about something he did or said.

  • Can you link text evidence and inferences?

    Hints

Read each text evidence option carefully and try to match it to a specific detail in the paragraph.

Look for specific details in the paragraph that give clues about Hewie's thoughts, words, and actions.

Pay attention to words that indicate thoughts or emotions, such as "shaking" as they can give important hints about Hewie's mindset.

    Solution

To complete this activity, read the paragraph carefully and look for clues about Hewie's thoughts, words, and actions.

First, we can infer that Hewie is a good student who cares about his academic performance through his thoughts. This is because the text evidence says, I have a big test coming up, and I have to study hard to do well.

Then, we can infer that something related to the library was making Hewie worried or uneasy through his actions. We know this because the text evidence says, Hewie walked into the library shaking. This means he might have been nervous or uncomfortable about being in the library.

Next, we can infer that the book Hewie needed was up very high through his actions. This is because the text evidence says, Hewie jumped up a few times, but he still couldn't reach it. This means that he was trying to get the book, but it was too high for him to reach.

Finally, we can infer that Hewie will ask for support when necessary through his words. This is because the text evidence tells us, Finally, he took a deep breath and asked the librarian, "Can you please get that book for me?" This means he asked the librarian to help him get the book he needed.

  • Identify evidence from the text.

    Hints

Look for text evidence that reveals what Hewie is thinking, feeling, or doing.

Use what you know about people, situations, and the world around you to draw a conclusion that makes sense.

There are two actions to find.

When you see quotation marks in a text, it means that someone is speaking or talking.

    Solution
    • Thoughts: "I must have made a mistake, he thought, I thought we were meeting at the beach."
    • Words: "Sorry about that!"
    • Actions: Hewie's "cheeks got hot"" and that he "moved off stage."
  • What can you infer from the text evidence provided?

    Hints

What does the phrase "Brinkley was wandering through the dense woods" suggest about Brinkley's movements?

What does the phrase "ears perked up" suggest about Brinkley's response?

Was Brinkley interested to find out who was in the woods?

What does the phrase "let out a low growl, ready to defend himself" suggest about Brinkley's intentions?

    Solution

To complete this activity, consider the following:

1.) The text evidence, "Brinkley was wandering through the dense woods," suggests that Brinkley may be comfortable in nature or the outdoors.

2.) The text evidence, "a loud rustling sound from the nearby bushes caught his attention" and "ears perked up,"suggests that Brinkley is alert and has good hearing.

3.) The text evidence, "Who's there?" Brinkley barked," suggests that Brinkley may have been interested to see who was there.

4.) The text evidence, "eyes widened with fear," suggests that Brinkley was frightened by what he saw.

5.) The text evidence, "took a few hesitant steps backward but couldn't take his gaze away," suggests Brinkley was torn between fear and curiosity and may have been trying to assess the situation to decide whether he should approach the animal or retreat.

6.) The text evidence "let out a low growl, ready to defend himself" suggests that Brinkley was preparing to protect himself from harm or assert his dominance against the animal.
