Basics on the topic Height, Length, and Width

Length, Width and Height

What is length, width, and height? When you need to describe the size of an object, you need to identify its length, width and its height. In this text, we will learn how to identify length, width, and height on several different objects. As an example, we will describe the length, width and height of a box. Let’s learn more about length, width, height and how to identify height length width with the following explanation.

Describing the Size of Objects

When we think about an object or a person, we can think about its size. Size is another way to talk about the space something takes up, like how big, small, long, and even wide a person or object is! Size can be measured using different parts of an object like its length, its width, and its height. These measurements tell us more information about the object's size! Let’s look at the difference between the words length, width, height, with the example of this box.

Identifying Length

Length is the distance from one side of an object to the other. We can ask, “how long is this object” to find its length. We can describe an object's length with words like long and short.

Identifying Width

Width is the distance of an object from front to back. We can ask, “how wide is this object” to find its width. We can describe an object's width with words like wide and narrow.

Identifying Height

Height is the distance from the top of an object to the bottom. We can ask, “how tall is this object” to find its height. We can describe an object's height with words like tall and small.

Length, Width and Height – Summary

Size can be measured using different parts of an object like its length, its width, and its height.

  • Length is the distance from one side of the object to the other.

  • Width is the distance from front to back.

  • Height is the distance from the top of an object to the bottom.

If you want to identify the length, width and height of an object, you can ask yourself these questions:

To identify… Ask yourself…
length How long / short is it?
width How wide / narrow is it?
height How tall / short is it?

Have you practiced yet? On this website, you can also find worksheets and interactive exercises for kindergarten level to practice finding the length, width, and height of an object.

Transcript Height, Length, and Width

Freddie and Zuri got new pets! Now, they are at the pet store looking at tanks to buy. All the tanks look similar, but some are a little bigger this way or a little shorter that way, so they call over a salesperson to explain. “They look different because the lengths, widths and heights are different sizes.” "Huh?" Let's help Zuri and Freddie by learning more about, "Length, Width, and Height.” When we think about an object or a person, we can think about its size. Size is another way to talk about the space something takes up, like how big, small, long, and even wide a person or object is! Size can be measured using different parts of an object like its length, its width, and its height. These measurements tell us more information about the object's size! Length is the distance from one side of an object to the other. We can ask, “how long is this object” to find its length. We can describe an object's length with words like long and short. Width is the distance of an object from front to back. We can ask, “how wide is this object” to find its width. We can describe an object's width with words like wide and narrow. Height is the distance from the top of an object to the bottom. We can ask, “how tall is this object” to find its height. We can describe an object's height with words like tall and small. Now that we know about length, width and height, let's practice by finding them! Here is the fish tank Freddie and Zuri want to buy. Let's look at this white line that goes from one side of the tank to the other. Is it showing the length, width, or height of the fish tank? Since it's measuring the distance from side to side, it's showing the length. What about the white line going from front to back on this treasure chest? Is it showing the length, width, or height? Since it's measuring the distance from front to back, it's showing the width. And how about this last white line on the fossil that goes from top to bottom: is it showing the length, width, or height? Since it's measuring the distance from top to bottom, it's showing the height. While Freddie and Zuri buy the tank and bring it home, let's remember! Today we learned about length, width and height. Size can be measured using different parts of an object like its length, its width, and its height. Length is the distance from one side of the object to the other. Width is the distance from front to back. Height is the distance from the top of an object to the bottom. "The tank fits great here!" "I know, the new guys will feel right at home!"

Height, Length, and Width exercise

Would you like to apply the knowledge you’ve learned? You can review and practice it with the tasks for the video Height, Length, and Width.
  • Length, width, or height?

    Hints

Which measurement shows how long or short an object is?

    Solution

Zuri is finding out how long or short her counter is, so she will measure the length.

  • What is Freddie measuring?

    Hints

Remember, the line is showing how tall or short the fish food is. Which measurement tells us about the distance from top to bottom?

The length measures how long or short an object is. This measurement needs to show how tall or short the object is.

    Solution

Height shows the distance from the top of the fish food to the bottom. Freddie will measure the height.

  • What does width measure?

    Hints

Remember, the width measures how wide an object is.

Remember, measuring one side to the other is the length.

    Solution

To find the width, Freddie and Zuri will need to measure the distance from front to back.

  • What do these words mean?

    Hints

Remember, we use length, width, and height to measure objects. Think about how each is measured.

When we measure length, we measure the distance from one side of the object to another. Which image shows measuring one side to the other?

When we measure width, we measure the distance from front to back. Which image shows measuring from front to back?

    Solution

Length is the distance from one side of the object to the other.

Width is the distance from front to back.

Height is the distance from the top to the bottom.

Size is the length, width, and height of an object.

  • Fill in the missing word.

    Hints

Remember, the length, width, and height measure a person or object. What is that measurement called?

Look at these examples of length, width, and height. What are they all measuring?

    Solution

Size can be measured by using length, width, and height.

  • Match describing words.

    Hints

Remember, each measurement has describing words to tell what it measures.

Think about what length, width, and height measure, and what words describe them.

    Solution

When we measure the length, we measure how long or short an object is. When we measure the width, we measure how wide or narrow an object is. When we measure the height, we measure how tall or small and object is.
